I was recently updating our member statistics for the fiscal year ended March 31. Since 1987, the average member renewal rate has been 87.72 percent. The rate for the last ten years is slightly lower at 87.26 percent. The renewal rate for the 2013 fiscal year just ended was 87.29 percent. The significance of this is that while we did lose some members because of the increase in dues, the impact since the increased dues invoices started going out last August is not what many predicted. While most of us do not want to see the dues increase, there does seem to be an understanding that we are managing the finances prudently on both the revenue and expense sides of the budget. We very much appreciate the loyalty of our members which has led to such a high renewal rate.

The Chapter Relations Committee recently received an application for a new specialty chapter. The idea for this chapter was an outgrowth of last year’s symposium on carriage clocks. The lead organizers for this International Carriage Clocks Chapter are Dr. Stan Boyatzis, Keith Potter, Doug Minty and Carl Sona, all from Australia. The chapter petition includes 55 members from around the world. As soon as the remaining organizational documents are received and reviewed by the Chapter Relations Committee, the application will be forwarded to the Board.

This week has been a busy one here in Columbia. Joe Cohen’s courses on watch valuation and clock valuation finished this past week and Gregg Perry’s three day seminar on clock conservation finishes Saturday. Stephen Nelson also on Saturday hosted the second webinar on reassembling a Vienna regulator clock. Approximately 100 persons registered for the webinar. There is one more webinar in what is in total of four webinars on the disassembly and reassembly of a Vienna regulator. Katie, our Education Director and I met with Program Chair Pat Holloway on Friday to discuss ways to bring more horological programming to the members and the public.

Last Wednesday, our website 4sale.nawcc.org was upgraded to the latest version. This was to address some incompatibilities between various web browsers and the old version and also to take advantage of enhancements in the newer version. The cost of the upgrade installation was $49. The annual cost of upgrades and support for the site is $279. Marcus Harris our communications director will be working the next several weeks on streamlining the site to make it easier to use. The 4Sale site currently has almost 1,100 NAWCC members registered on the site and almost 1,800 registered non-members who can purchase from auction and classified listings where sellers are willing to sell to the public. We encourage sellers to use the built in PayPal link to automate auction sales especially when selling to the public.
