I had the pleasure last Wednesday of attending a panel discussion, reception and viewing of the exhibit Gunmetal Watches of the Mid-19th Century at the Forbes Galleries on 5th Avenue in New York City. The collection on exhibit except for four watches loaned from our museum collection is owned by F.P. Journe, the renowned watchmaker and head of F.P. Journe the maker of custom watches and exclusive collections. Noel Poirier, our museum director participated on the panel with Mr. Journe and two other experts. Mr. Journe also has a book that details the collection and was signing copies. A number of members of the watch media were in attendance. The exhibit will be in New York until mid-September and then will travel to the National Watch and Clock Museum for a fall exhibit. For more information on the event, visit

This past week we received the first distribution from the estate of Betty R. Deroski of Cutchogue, NY. Her husband Robert was a member for 38 years before passing in 2007. The check was for $31,250 and is estimated to be about half of what will be distributed to the NAWCC from the estate’s trust. Twenty-five percent of the trust is to be split among six beneficiaries of which we are one. This means we will receive 4.17% of the trust.

The Board voted in its April business to discontinue the yearlong diploma programs at the School of Horology while affirming strong support for shorter term educational offerings for beginners, serious collectors and repair professionals. They also voted down the budget proposal that was under consideration to allow for additional adjustments on the income and expense sides. Work is continuing on the budget with consideration of a revised budget probably being voted on at the June meeting.
