Last Monday we received a donation of $20,000 for the School of Horology from one of our members. So far this fiscal year, we have had 59 persons make donations to the school plus a number of others who have donated watches, clocks and equipment. The school is continuing to recruit students for the next program year which starts in July. Members referring students who enroll will be rewarded with a year’s free membership and a gift certificate for the NAWCC Store. Many of our students are embarking on a second career after serving in the military or working in industry. [more]

This past week was the funeral service for Ken Wolpert. Ken worked about twelve years for the NAWCC as maintenance manager. He took care of our facilities, managed contractors, helped build exhibits and other tasks. Ken had struggled with cancer for over a year. Previous to the NAWCC, Ken had worked as a wood and metal pattern maker and had served in the US Navy. [more]

The School of Horology watch students returned from holiday break last Monday and started the Watch Technician course which covers quartz watches, batteries, cases, crowns, stems, crystals, bands and other non-mechanical movement areas. The clock students return this coming Monday and will be starting the course on Wooden Clock Movements. To date six students have applied for admission for the school programs that start in July. The roofers and HVAC technicians have been busy on the roof this past week. The HVAC repairs are to a leaking coil in a roof top air handler and the roofers were power washing the roof in preparation for repair and replacement of the upper roof in the spring. Both managed to make a lot of noise that reverberated through our offices.

The NAWCC message board website was updated to a new version over the weekend of January 1. The team headed by Tom McIntyre is continuing to address items that resulted from the upgrade. The new version will increase our capabilities and should help with the speed of the site. A new server was also installed to improve our web services but is still awaiting the installation and testing of the needed programs. [more]

This last week of the year is always busy in the National Watch and Clock Museum as many are traveling and stop in. We also had a Groupon deal for museum admission running that netted over 200 sales. Last Monday a new audiovisual system was installed in the theater to allow us to resume showing the orientation video. It will also provide enhanced capabilities for other programs and facility rentals. [more]
